Teenagers from schools across Kent will discover just how their love for phones and computer games could act as a gateway to a rewarding career developing the next generation of must-have gadgets at a special event in the county in September.
Some 300 young people are expected to attend the TeenTech Kent event, designed to highlight the exciting potential of careers in science, engineering and technology. The event takes place at The River Centre in Tonbridge in September. Scientists and engineers from some of the UK’s top technology companies will be on hand to show off their latest gadgets and show students just how the skills they already have can be developed into a successful career.
Run by the Kent Education Business Partnership, the event will be hosted by TeenTech co-founder and former Tomorrow’s World presenter Maggie Philbin, who said: “ We had very positive feedback from schools and companies last year and it was brilliant to see the excitement and enthusiasm of the young people . We need to develop that excitement.The South East is vital to UK economic growth, so having the right people with relevant skills is very important”
“Students, teachers and parents have very outdated ideas about the career opportunities in emerging industries. Most teenagers have never met a scientist or an engineer.
“When I asked one class if they could give me the name of any contemporary scientist, engineer or technologist, the only name they came up with was Einstein. We need to change these perceptions because they hold back young people and they will ultimately effect the economy.”

There is still time for companies and individuals working in the Science and Technology sector to participate, either by running interactive stands or volunteering to be an ambassador at the event.
